about

MikeRat is back with his followup to last year's 'Scamper Vol. 1', for more ninja shit and swank. 'Biggleskrizz' begins our exploration into the genre bending endeavour of Scamper. With a bass line that almost trudges through the overlaying melody, the mind begins to move. It’s thick; almost giving us a sense of dissonance with how easily the melody hangs above. In turn, we are left with an image of a detailed soundscape that accurately sets the listener up for the tracks to come. On the next track, 'Western Booty', right off the bat we are entranced with what can be described as “an open hallway of sound design.” One piece at a time, the track begins to build. With minimal additions tastefully placed on top of one another, it’s as if we are slowly putting the whole puzzle together. As we reach the capstone, the drums begin to take hold, and just when you think you have it down, he switches it up. Next we are hit with “Lights Out!” and the tone is different. It’s ominous. Where have I heard this before? Have I heard this before? Before you can even finish the thought, things are bumpin'. Like traveling through Luigi’s mansion with a nasty gangster lean. This isn’t just bass distortion and sound design, it’s straight up crooked. Melon Collie is our last stop on our jaunt, easing us back down into a hush that hadn’t been previously available. Once again, in the spirit of the project, we are blindsided by a cacophony of sound design that fits and blends so well with the acoustic aspects that we can’t help but stop what we’re doing and listen. Everything must be heard. This collaborative effort with Loom in Essence truly captures both artists' vibe and sound design. As a whole this release is fun, bass oriented but still melody focused, and has a swagger that will make anyone get down.
